Funded by the Volkswagen Foundation, a workshop will take place during July 5th and 7th in Hannover on the topic of “The Digital Reach of the Chinese State: Emerging Research Fields”. Digitalization presents enormous challenges and opportunities to governments worldwide. China presents a special case, given its forerunner status in digital technologies and its immense global impact on digitalization. In the growing research field of digital governance in China, there is general consensus that the Chinese government uses digital technologies to strengthen its control over society while also providing public goods more efficiently. Yet, many burning questions remain: What are the positive and negative effects of the nationwide adoption of digital technology? How exactly has citizen participation in China transformed under digitalization? How can researchers tackle the opportunities and risks of digital research possibilities? Through moderated brainstorming sessions and thematic reflection panels, this workshop brings together leading scholars from political science, China studies, sociology, communication studies, and law, who will discuss the Digital Reach of the Chinese State and thereby consolidate this critically important research field of digital governance in China.
